CSI - Coffee Shop Illusion

Dan Baines

You only have to watch the video clip of CSI on Lebanon Circle’s website to see what a great effect this is.

The effect is simple. A ring is introduced and examined by a spectator. It is seen to be completely solid with no gaps or breaks in it. A chain is also handed to the spectator, this can also be examined. The spectator is asked to thread the ring onto the chain and fasten up the clasp. The ring is trapped on the chain. To reinforce this even further, a padlock is also given to the spectator who opens it and locks it around both the chain and the ring. There’s no escape, or is there?

The ring, trapped on the chain, is lowered carefully into a cup of coffee. Within seconds it is lifted out to reveal the ring has gone. The cup can also be examined. It really has gone. The ring is then produced from another location of your choice (on your finger, or back in the ring box, etc...)

This really does look like real magic that has no explanation. The method is as unbelievably clever as the effect itself and is explained in thorough detail by Lebanon Circle’s Dan Baines on the accompanying DVD.

On receiving CSI you are presented with two boxes, ‘A’ and ‘B’. Box ‘A’ contains the ring, chain, padlock and wooden coffee stirrer. Box ‘B’ in comparison is wrapped like a present in gift wrap and clearly states that it is to be opened after watching the DVD. I won’t go into details of what’s actually in this box but it does contain everything you will need to reset the necessary gimmick(s).

There is a reset time that needs to be taken into consideration when performing CSI. At least a few hours is needed, ideally longer, to reset the gimmick. If you need two of them then obviously double this timescale. This, as you might imagine, does not make it suitable for tablehopping. It would be an ideal effect to perform for, say, the Chief Executive at a company dinner or Bride and Groom at a wedding.

The concept behind this has to be admired greatly, and plans are set for the release of other CSI objects, such as spoons and coins.

CSI comes highly recommended. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for the CSI principle. PS

What’s Hot: Look like real magic. Visually stunning
What’s Not: Long time to reset
Star Rating: *****
