This is David Penn’s bending wine glass routine, which he uses as a climax to a ‘bending routine’ – which is also shown on this DVD. The magician picks up a wine glass from an adjoining table and proceeds to gently rub the stem in front of the spectator. The glass slowly begins to bend. To make the effect seem even more impressive, the magician then places the wine glass in the hands of the spectator and the glass continues to bend right in front of them. This is an undeniably impressive effect when performed as an ending to a routine, but does require the right setting to make this have maximum impact.
Just a few minutes preparation (and a piece of equipment from a hardware store) is needed for what is essentially a one-off effect. Don’t expect to perform this at every table – David reveals that he usually performs this effect for the event organiser – and then leaves them with the signed glass as an unforgettable souvenir. There is quite bold handling required to make this effect work to its best, and there are also angle issues to consider. This effect is one for the confident magician with the ability to manipulate the spectator, and depending on your venue, may not always be possible to perform easily. This could be an effect that lends itself more easily to an intimate cabaret setting.
The effect is really startling, and David dissects the full routine, paying good attention to the important subtleties and switching techniques.
