Filmed live at International Magic’s 2007 convention in London, Anthony Owen shares some of his favourite material from his best selling books ‘Some Tricks’ and ‘Some More Tricks’.
The DVD kicks off with Anthony’s opener ‘Natural Lottery’. The effect is simple. Six spectators each name a number between one and forty nine. At the end a Lottery ticket is produced which has the very same six numbers printed on the ticket.
This effect is extremely topical at present with Derren Brown’s recent National Lottery prediction sweeping the nation, (which Anthony was the show producer for incidentally) and is basically a combination of two great British mentalism routines which most will already be familiar with.
Next is a simple and extremely effective solution to David Berglas’s Holy Grail of card effects ‘Any Card At Any Number’. Unlike other methods, however, the named card has the number printed on the back of it rather than being at the numbered position. Like most magic effects this one is simple to do and would be a great addition to anyone’s repertoire.
‘Holey Sh*t!’ is next. This was commercially released a few years ago in collaboration with Pete Firman (check out magicseen, issue 9 for a full review of this effect). This is explained in detail on the DVD, however, you will need special gimmicked cards (available from www.tvmagic.co.uk).
Big Survivor is a nice stage effect, and didn’t really get the applause it deserved on film. The audience are invited to evict members of a magical reality show. The performer reveals at the end that he predicted the outcome not once but twice. This is a good solid piece of mentalism that could easily be adapted to suit various presentations.
Finally, there is a performance only of Anthony’s ‘Ultimate Oil & Water’. A full review of this can be found in this very same issue. In all, this is an enjoyable DVD to watch and learn from. Recommended. PS
